💡 Big AI Bets, Bigger Lessons

The mothership behind Google, YouTube, Gemini, and Waymo… Alphabet’s Q1 earnings just dropped, and they’re big.

Key Facts

  • 💰 Alphabet reported $90.2 billion in revenue in Q1 2025, marking a 12% increase from last year.
  • 🚗 Waymo is now offering 250,000 paid robotaxi rides weekly, a significant jump from previous years.
  • 🤖 Google’s AI model Gemini is powerful but faces challenges in user adoption.

We know why Alphabet is thriving.

Their core services like Google Search, Android, and YouTube are well established and popular, which isn’t surprising considering how intertwined they are with our daily routines.

But what’s really caught my eye is Alphabet’s hefty investment a massive $75B into AI infrastructure. We’re talking data centers, custom chips, and new models.

That’s moonshot cash.

But not all of Alphabet’s AI projects are doing so well…which underscores a crucial point.

Google’s model Gemini, for example, is a powerhouse, technically impressive and full of potential, but it’s not catching on as quickly as some might expect.

Why?

My take..

💬 Because it’s not just about what AI can do. It’s about how people feel using it.

Meanwhile, Waymo (the self-driving car project) is quietly crushing it with 250,000 rides across various U.S. cities per week.

No driver.

No wheel grab.

Just you and your “AI driver”, cruising. 😎

The takeaway? Tech only takes off when people trust it and enjoy using it. That’s the real difference between a breakthrough and a flop.

So here’s the question:
What’s your “Gemini” right now? Where are you investing in something powerful… but maybe losing the human touch?

→ Whether you’re building a product, launching a service, or leading a team, don’t forget: user experience is the experience.

Last thing on Google: They’re rolling out AI Mode to everyone 🔗 as a Labs experiment (vs being a subscription test).

🛍️ ChatGPT’s New Shopping Sidekick

Get ready. This is the most seamless online shopping has ever felt.

Key Facts

  • 🛒 ChatGPT now offers personalized product recommendations across a wide range of categories.
  • 🛍️ Provides detailed product information without any ads.
  • 🌐 Available globally to everyone, even without logging in.

About a decade ago I cofounded a cash-back tech startup in SF that created over ¼ Billion in GMV. So I know a bit about commerce.

This was the first startup I really got into AI. Before it was cool.

I hired a data scientist, machine learning engineers and had huge enterprise contacts with data providers in an effort to make sense of millions of rows of data, pricing dynamics, user behavior etc.

FWIW, all of that is replaced now with a free ChatGPT account.

And this might be one of the most underrated updates from OpenAI: ChatGPT is now your ad-free, hyper-personal shopping assistant.

The conversational aspect even allows for more specific queries and personalized experiences. It’s like having a personal shopper available 24/7.

I tested it out looking for some new luggage, and as expected, got a fabulous set of results, with clear images, reviews, no ads and just a beautiful display of options to review.

My prompt:

im looking for great quality, clean and minimal luggage for a trip to europe this summer. i want it to look sharp, be a unique color and have a matched set for my whole family.

It was like texting with an expert friend who actually reads Consumer Reports for fun.

I’ll say it one more time for the people in the back:

No tracking

No bias.

No affiliate links.

Just helpful info.

It’s early, but I’m betting this shifts e-commerce in a big way.

What’s particularly curious is that OpenAI isn’t earning anything from these suggestions (yet). The recommendations are unbiased and genuinely aimed at helping users.

💼 For Business Owners:

Especially in the e-commerce space, this could be a is huge.

Imagine your product being recommended by an AI assistant used by millions worldwide.

👨‍👩‍👧 For Consumers:

This could will make shopping more efficient and enjoyable. No more wading through irrelevant ads or feeling overwhelmed by endless choices.

Is this something you’d lean into? I’d honestly love to know.
