Parasocial was the Cambridge Dictionary Word of the Year for 2025 for a good reason.
AI is now part of our social circles.
And not just as a confidant (which AI is for millions of people), but as a mental clone.
Let that sink inβ¦
We’re normalizing emotional bonds with software in ways we’ve never seen before.
And there are a lot of benefits to this.
– Reduced loneliness.
– Identity exploration.
– Bridges to community.
But can a parasocial relationship really work? Can it be genuine, real, and truly help your business expand its impact?
Iβve spent the past two years watching this unfold up close while helping clients build their own digital minds and parasocial relationships.
We’re now in an era where attention isn’t just about clicks.
It’s about presence.
The right kind of presence can steady someone’s day, model better choices, and pull them closer to real community.
So let’s talk about what’s changing and how you can use parasocial relationships with care and purpose across your business, your products, and the communities you leadβ¦
π² The One-Sided Relationship That Works
What parasocial dynamics reveal about humans, business, and the next wave of AI.
Key Facts
- 𧩠From concern to tool: New research shows healthy parasocial bonds can reduce loneliness and help with identity growth and community entry.
- π€ AI as a friend: Cambridge Dictionary now includes emotional bonds with AI assistants and companion apps in the definition of parasocial.
- ποΈ Creators over celebrities: Podcasts and live streams have replaced distant celebrity culture with more personal interactions.
When you think of parasocial (and what it means with an emotional attachment), you probably think of Elvis or One Direction fans screaming at a TV.
That picture doesn’t fit anymore.
It’s always been there, now it’s just more available than ever.
The AI companion shift brings us always-available, non-judgmental chat that makes people feel seen.
This matters most for those who are isolated or time-constrained. Think about Replika or Character.ai, or newer voice modes that feel more conversational. Did you everΒ try Sesame?
This is what we call the authenticity economy.
Which basically means we spend hours with creators who speak plainly about life and work.
It feels like a real friendship.
For many people, it functions like one too.
You get vibes, guidance, and a steady drumbeat of encouragement.
And it’s spread everywhere.
In fact it’s the only online world my daughters know. They’re not raving fan-girls for specific creators because we have content limits in our home, but they have only grown up in a world that knows what it’s like to follow and understand those putting content out.
Here’s the twist: the latest research doesn’t paint this as doom. Used with intention, it looks like a supplement to real connection.
β€οΈ Is This a Good Thing?
β A secure base during tough seasons
Studies from 2024 and 2025 show links between parasocial interactions (including with AI) and reduced loneliness.
β An identity lab for teens and neurodivergent folks
A low-risk place to test ideas and practice skills can help build confidence for two-sided relationships later.
β A bridge into real community
Fandoms and creator communities create shared language.
That shared context helps strangers connect, reduces stigma, and opens doors for mental health support.
So the question really isn’t “Are parasocial relationships good or bad?”
The better question is: How do we guide this energy so it actually serves people?
That’s where a newer approach caught my attention.
π§ Building Digital Minds With Delphi
Not too long ago, I introduced you to Library of Minds. ICYMI you can catch up here.
A digital mind is a similar concept. Basically it’s an interactive model of a real person’s thinking, trained on their talks, writing, and conversations.
People can access that person’s perspectives anytime in text, voice, SMS, WhatsApp and even over a phone call.
This isn’t a generic chatbot that wants to be your buddy.
These are works of art I’m damn proud of and a portal to a person you already trust. A coach, founder, teacher, therapist, or even a family elder.
Here’s a few examples of what I’ve been working on 1-on-1 with clients. πππ
This one I set up for Matthew Hussey has now handled over 1 million conversations and approaching 18 million chats exchanged.
Imagine getting dating advice specific to you and your situation from an expert at the click of a button.
I cloned Jay Abraham’s mind and honestly this is the ultimate business tool and thinking partner for businesses of all sizes.
Expertise like this used to cost tens of thousands with Jay. Now business leaders can access it for a fraction of that rate.
Another one that’s been really fun to build was for Lewis Howes. You can SMS text him and every podcast ever recorded for The School of Greatness.
For leaders, entrepreneurs, and athletes, this is huge. They can push their own potential to the max.
It also works over WhatsApp to offer a truly global messaging channel.
Building a digital mind takes an expert’s specialty and makes it more accessible to people. This one I created with Gabby Bernstein allows users to meditate with her directly on her app and calm your nervous system on demand.
I could keep going, the examples get better each month.
This tech has the potential to transform your business
Here’s why:
- π§ Your mind, on tap. It indexes your actual material using an adaptive graph and retrieval system. Answers reflect how you think, not a canned FAQ.
- π Always present without burning out. It handles questions in your voice when you sleep or travel. You never miss a connection.
- π₯ A human-first stance. The goal is to scale trust and prompt more human contact, not to substitute for it.
People already feel close to you through your work.
Delphi channels that energy into a format that answers back with context and care.
It turns lurking into learning, and learning into action.
While most companion AI begins with the bot as the main attachment. Delphi begins with a real person and their values.
Delphi’s actually started as an effort to keep “talking” with a grandfather who could no longer respond.
Companion apps can trap people in a closed loop but Delphi aims to amplify human contact. DMs, calls, community joins, live events. It gives people a helpful first step.
ποΈ Here’s How You Apply It
No matter your field, you already have parasocial energy around your brand. The question is how to guide it so people feel supported, seen, and ready for the next step.
Creators and coaches
Give your audience a place to ask personal questions at any hour. They get answers consistent with your voice. Use the patterns in those questions to plan content and products.
B2B sales and customer success
Turn a founder’s thinking or a product leader’s decisions into an interactive guide. Shorten those “is this for me?” cycles. Reduce repeat questions.
Education and training
Let students query a teacher’s lectures, notes, and examples to build confidence. This especially helps shy learners.
Healthcare, nonprofit, and community leaders
Offer first-line emotional support and vetted information. Keep a clean handoff to human care when needed.
Ask yourself:
- Where are people already “hanging out” with your work? Podcast? YouTube? Docs? Slack? Church groups? Patient forums?
- If they could ask “you” one private question at 2 a.m., what would it be?
- What step could a conversation with your digital mind make easier? Booking a call? Joining a cohort? Trying the product? Asking for help?
Think about this for a second. The distance between “follower” and “friend” has basically disappeared.
