o1 Enters The Chat
Imagine a world where your computer doesn’t just compute…

OpenAI’s o1 model is turning that dream into reality, outthinking humans in fields from coding to chemistry and it’s available to all of us today.
Let’s spend some time on the latest development in artificial intelligence: OpenAI’s new o1 model. This AI is designed to think more like humans, taking time to reason through complex problems before answering. It’s particularly adept at tackling tasks in science, coding, and math, and the results are turning heads in the tech community.
I’ve been hammering it with hard, wild, out-there, complicated & sometimes even ridiculous tests and it’s nailing all of them better than any other model out there.
Let’s break down some of o1’s achievements and stats:
- Scored in the 89th percentile on Codeforces competitive programming questions
- Placed among the top 500 students in the USA Math Olympiad qualifier (AIME)
- Outperformed PhD-level humans on the GPQA benchmark covering physics, biology, and chemistry
- Achieved a Codeforces Elo rating of 1807, putting it in the 93rd percentile globally
- Ranked in the 49th percentile for the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI)
These results showcase o1’s ability to compete with top human performers across various STEM fields. To put this in perspective, imagine a single AI system that can:
- Solve complex coding challenges better than most professional programmers
- Tackle advanced math problems on par with top high school & college math competitors
- Answer graduate-level science questions more accurately than many PhDs

The secret behind o1’s capabilities is reinforcement learning, which teaches the AI to reason rather than just memorize facts. This approach allows o1 to tackle novel problems and think through solutions step-by-step.
OpenAI released two versions of the model:
o1-preview: The full-powered version for the most challenging tasks
o1-mini: A smaller, faster, and more cost-effective version, still capable of impressive performance
While o1-mini is 80% cheaper to run than o1-preview, it maintains competitive performance on coding benchmarks, making it an attractive option for developers.
However, o1 isn’t without its limitations:
- It’s slower than some other AI models, sometimes taking over 10 seconds to answer complex questions
- The model is more expensive to run, with input costs 3 times higher and output costs 4 times higher than GPT-4
- There are reports of increased “hallucinations” or confident but incorrect statements
- Currently lacks features like web browsing and file analysis available in other models
Despite these challenges, o1 represents a massive step forward in AI reasoning capabilities. Its performance across these benchmarks indicates its potential to assist in solving complex problems in fields ranging from scientific research to software development and untold others.
These are also available to all paid users of ChatGPT today, and you can see for yourself just how incredibly detailed and reason-based the answers are.
The release of o1 has intensified the AI race, with companies like Google, Anthropic, and Elon Musk’s xAI all working on similar “thinking” AI models. This competition is driving rapid advancements in the field.
Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to:
- Extend o1-mini access to all free ChatGPT users in the future
- Improve the models’ capabilities and address current limitations
- Integrate additional features such as browsing and file uploads
- Experiment with AI models capable of even longer periods of “thinking” to solve increasingly complex problems
It’s clear that the o1 model represents a significant leap in creating AI that can truly reason and problem-solve like humans.
Did someone say singularity?
While it’s not perfect, it’s opening up new possibilities for how we can use AI to tackle some of the world’s most challenging issues and I still believe we’ll achieve AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) sooner than later. o1 is the latest proof we’re closer than ever.
