Apple Artificial Intelligence
Apple just dropped a bombshell at their Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC 2024) with the unveiling of Apple Intelligence, their groundbreaking AI system that’s about to fundamentally change the way we interact with our devices.
This personalized AI is designed to simplify tasks and enable seamless actions across apps, all while keeping your privacy and data control front and center.
And for those of us who are using the latest hardware devices, Apple Intelligence will be available for free on devices with an M1 chip or later, including the iPhone 15 Pro, iPad Pro, and the entire Mac lineup.
This AI is no joke – it can generate images, summarize text, and even create custom emojis within Apple’s native apps all while using the data it’s learned to be your one stop assistant.
Let’s dive in more.
One of the standout features of Apple Intelligence is its integration with Siri, and updates to Siri are long overdue.
Our “favorite” virtual assistant is about to get a major upgrade, becoming more natural, relevant, and personal than ever before.
Siri will be able to cross-reference information and respond to conversational language, making it feel like you’re chatting with a super-smart friend.
And get this – Siri’s enhancements aren’t just limited to iPhone; they’re coming to Mac and iPad too. Plus, there’s a new type-to-Siri feature for those who prefer to communicate via text.
Apple Intelligence also took a big leap when it comes to writing. It offers proofreading, rewriting, and summarizing features to help you craft the perfect message every time. And if that wasn’t enough, the AI system can even control apps, allowing you to ask Siri to pull up specific files or photos and understand the context around your life.
Now, I know what you might be thinking – “What about my privacy?”
Apple took a different approach.
Most AI models are processed on-device, with ‘Private Cloud Compute’ serving as a backup for more powerful models.
And here’s the kicker – Apple has partnered with OpenAI to allow users to write text using ChatGPT and access its real-world knowledge, but only with your permission.
Apple Intelligence is set to power a whole host of AI features across iOS 18, from email summarization and response generation to custom emoji creation (Genmoji) and an AI image generator in the Photos app. These AI-driven enhancements are all about providing a more personalized and efficient user experience while maintaining Apple’s unwavering commitment to privacy and security.
But not everyone is thrilled about this partnership. Elon Musk, the co-founder turned critic of OpenAI, has already publicly threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, if Apple integrates OpenAI’s technology at the operating system level. Musk sees this move as an “unacceptable security violation,” citing concerns about user data privacy and security.
Despite Apple’s assurances that user permissions would be required before sharing data with OpenAI and that privacy protections are built-in, Musk remains skeptical. He’s demanded that Apple CEO Tim Cook halt the integration, even going so far as to threaten that visitors to his companies would have to check their Apple devices at the door and store them in a Faraday cage to prevent electromagnetic interference.
This conflict highlights the broader concerns about user privacy and data security in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, as well as the competitive tensions between major tech companies. As AI continues to advance and integrate into our daily lives, it’s crucial that we remain vigilant about protecting our personal information and holding companies accountable for their data practices.
These were just the big items – but it’s important to know that AI is now being integrated vertically over just about everything in our phones and lives.
So, what do you think?
Are you excited about the possibilities of Apple Intelligence, or do you share Musk’s concerns about privacy and security? One thing’s for sure – the AI revolution is here, and it’s going to be one wild ride.
Perplexity gives us Pages
Have you heard about Perplexity AI’s new feature called Perplexity Pages?
This AI-powered tool is about to shake up the way we create, organize, and share articles on any topic imaginable. With just a simple search query, you can automatically generate well-structured, informative content that’s ready to be customized and shared with the world.
One of the coolest things about Perplexity Pages is the level of customization it offers.
Want to change up the visuals? No problem.. you can easily upload your own banner image, generate one using AI, or choose from a selection of images found on the internet.
And if you want to fine-tune your content, the integrated highlight tool lets you edit and rearrange sections, rewrite text to adjust the tone, and add relevant media like images and videos to make your pages pop.
Perplexity Pages also allows you to tailor your content to different target audiences, from casual readers to subject matter experts. By specifying your intended audience when creating a new page, you can ensure that the generated content is pitched at the perfect level of complexity and engagement.
This is blessing and wildly beneficial for educators, researchers, and content creators looking to communicate their ideas effectively to a wide range of readers in minutes, not days.
Example, I built this page on Perplexity Pages 🔗 in 18 seconds (I timed it).
Of course, it’s important to remember that while Perplexity Pages can make the content creation process a breeze, users should still take the time to verify the accuracy of the generated information. But with a little bit of fine-tuning and some strategic thinking, the possibilities are truly endless.
